6.8- Magnitude quake hits Peru coast

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) — A strong earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, was detected near the coast of Peru at 1.36 pm today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement, said that the epicentre of the earthquake was located at 15.8 degrees south and 74.4 degrees west, at a depth of 60 km, 234 km southeast of Ica, Peru.

The quake did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia, read the statement.
