KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2: Alex Ooi Thiam Poh from the Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur is the new Governor of Lions International District 308B1 for the 2023/2024 term, taking over from Dorothy Ong Lee Ping.
District 308B1 has a membership of almost 2,000 from 74 clubs based in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Melaka and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
Ooi, having been a Lions Club member for more than 20 years, aims to continue the on-going projects of his predecessors such as community health service, diabetes awareness, disaster and hunger relief, environmental awareness and youth development.
An accountant by profession, Ooi is currently attached to the Securities Commission Malaysia as Executive Director.
Taking a cue from Lions International President Dr Patti Hill’s mission for the new fiscal year, Ooi says he will continue the global mission of ‘Changing the World’, stressing that “for over a century, the Lions network has been reaching out and serving our communities all over the world with much impact.”
“We have changed the lives of those whom we had reached out, with the Lions network acknowledged as the beacon of hope for many of our communities. We are literally “Changing the World” every day,” he points out.
Having selected ‘Towards a Sustainable Future’ as his mission, Ooi says “we must not lose sight that the changes we make must be sustainable, as it is all about fulfilling the needs of the current generation without compromising the needs of future generations.”
“It is a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being. Not only must Lions understand and be aware of such matters that are upon us, but we need to create greater awareness and impact in our community. Henceforth, we need to ensure that whatever impact that we create, the change has to be for the sustainability of our future,” he stresses.
