GEORGE TOWN, Oct 12: The globally renowned computer science school, ’42’, is set to open its doors here and accept student enrollment next year, the result of a landmark collaboration between the state government, Digital Penang, Sunway Education Group and Khazanah Nasional Bhd.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said 42 Penang would will be an addition to the esteemed network of campuses nationwide under 42 Malaysia, which aims to be a driving force in developing digital skills and contributing to technological innovation in the region.
He said it would provide an accessible and innovative learning experience in computer science, following the successful 42 learning model from France, which adopts a peer-to-peer learning approach, offering a unique and inclusive platform for students to acquire real-world skills through project-based learning, with zero fees.
“This establishment is a catalyst for social mobility and economic opportunity. Now, every individual in the state, regardless of background or prior experience, can learn essential IT skills.
“Graduates of 42 Penang will be in high demand from employers in Penang and across the world. The tech industry is growing rapidly, and we are facing a shortage of skilled workers, therefore the graduates will be well-positioned to take advantage of these opportunities and build successful careers,” he told reporters at the announcement of 42 Penang here Wednesday.
In addition, Chow said the state government would allocate RM3.25 million over the next three years to ensure the success of this endeavour.
Sunway Education Group chief executive officer, Prof Datuk Dr Elizabeth Lee, said the 42 learning model has proven its effectiveness in producing tech-savvy talents, and they are confident that graduates of this programme would be valuable additions to any industry.
“Education must continuously evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of industry and society. This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to fostering the next generation of highly skilled tech talents, ensuring that they are equipped to thrive in the dynamic landscape of the digital era,” she said.
