BAKU, Feb 9 (Bernama-AZERTAC) — Dewan Negara Deputy President Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed commended Azerbaijan’s peaceful elections, noting that they demonstrated the people’s support for democratic processes and their aspiration to live in peaceful conditions.
Nur Jazlan, who is leading the Malaysian parliamentary monitoring mission on the Azerbaijani snap presidential election on Wednesday, stated that he believed the elections were conducted in compliance with international norms.
“The elections proceeded without incident overall, and no one’s right to vote being violated,” Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) quoted Nur Jazlan as saying during a press conference on the outcomes of the elections.
The senator noted that the mission had monitored the elections at five polling stations and Bilgah settlement in Baku.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in a statement Friday, noted that the Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (national assembly), met with the Malaysian parliamentary monitoring mission in Baku.
She expressed her gratitude to the mission for monitoring the elections, which were of significant historical importance for Azerbaijan.
“She proceeded to tell them that the presidential election was a political development of formidable importance in terms of shaping the future progress of the country,” the statement read.
She pointed out that the presidential election had, for the first time, taken place across the entire territory of Azerbaijan, including Khankendi, Shusha, and other provinces, ensuring the complete sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
Gafarova emphasised that every necessary step had been taken to ensure that the presidential election be conducted freely, democratically and transparently, in compliance with the requirements of the law and meeting all the advanced standards.
“The high voter turnout was one of the highlights. Our people had gone to the polling stations and voted for the future of our state,” the embassy quoted Gafarova as saying.
The embassy stated that the Malaysian parliamentary monitoring mission praised the development of Azerbaijan, emphasising that the country was open to the international community.
The meeting also discussed the development of bilateral ties between Malaysia and Azerbaijan, as well as inter-parliamentary relations.
According to media reports, incumbent Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was reelected on Wednesday in the presidential election with 92.1 per cent of the vote.
