Prabowo reaffirms commitment to strengthen bilateral defence ties with Egypt

JAKARTA, July 11 (Bernama) — Indonesian Defence Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening a harmonious and mutually beneficial bilateral defence relationship with Egypt.

This commitment was expressed during a meeting with Grand Sheikh Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Prof Dr Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad At-Tayyeb at the Ministry of Defence, Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry said Prabowo expressed Indonesia’s deep appreciation for Egypt, highlighting its historical significance as one of the earliest nations to recognise Indonesian independence.

“I personally hold great admiration for Egypt’s history and the resilience of its people,” he said during the hour-long discussion.

The meeting covered discussions on changes in the Islamic world, Egypt’s expectations from Indonesia as a prominent Muslim nation, and joint efforts for peace in Gaza, Palestine.

Sheikh Al-Azhar congratulated Prabowo on his recent electoral victory and offered prayers for his success in guiding Indonesia forward and advocating for its national interests.

“Indonesia represents an exemplary Islamic model in development and progress while upholding religion and values in a multicultural society,” he said.

Prabowo is scheduled to be inaugurated as the eighth President of Indonesia on Oct 20, 2024.
