IPOH: Sunway Group founder and chairman, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah expressed confidence that the upcoming Sunway Ipoh Mall will do well, based on the developer’s success so far with its development of malls.

The mall has also already attracted many retailers who are keen to take up tenancy in the mall, he said during a press conference held in conjunction with the ground-breaking ceremony held for the RM1 billion mall, touted to be the largest in Perak.

He also cited the strategic location of the development area, falling within minutes of exit from the North South Expressway at Tambun, to Ipoh city and the railway station as well as to the Amanjaya Terminal and Kinta District.

Cheah was reponding to a reporter’s query on the group’s expectations considering that there were many malls in the country with some not doing too well or seeing low occupancy rate.

The Sunway Group founder also said the mall will be built in a sustainable way, ensuring that it blends in with the natural surrounding of limestone hills. It will be built to achieve green certification in line with the group’s commitment towards achieving net zero caron emissions by 2050.

The mall will be part of the group’s ongoing Sunway City Ipoh integrated township that will cover the development of theme park, hospitality, healthcare, education, residential and commercial properties.

The 1,350-acre township is expected to generate thousands of jobs, spur tourism and economic growth in the state.

The mall, which will cover 1 million sq ft of net lettable area across four retail floors, will feature among others, an ice-skating rink, exhibition centre, cinema theatres and a special Gourmet Garden that wil offer outdoor food and beverage outlets amid a garden setting.

Welcoming the development, Perak Menteri Besar Dato Seri Saarani Mohamad said public-private partnerships such as the Sunway City Ipoh played a crucial role in driving economic and social development.

He said the state government would give its full support to such a transformative project as it aimed to elevate Ipoh as an international metropolis and among the most economically advanced cities in the country.
