KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20: People must use water more responsibly and with climate change, water conservation will be even more crucial, said National Water Services Commission (SPAN) Chairman, Charles Santiago.

Speaking to reporters at a recent Deepavali lunch organised by SPAN for community leaders and the media, Santiago urged leaders present at the event to also undertake more efforts to ensure that water is consumed responsibly.

He said daily water consumption in Malaysia was quite high.

In 2021, the country’s average water consumption was at 201 litres per capita per day, which equals to 134 bottles of mineral water (1.5 litres). It was higher than the recommended value by the World Health Organization (WHO), at 165 LCD.

Santiago said efforts will be also taken to educate and create awareness among school children on the importance of water consumption and they could go on to take a role of spreading the awareness.
