Church of the Immaculate Conception, Penang Hosts Tree Lighting Ceremony to Celebrate Community and Diversity

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 7: The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Pulau Tikus here lit up the festive season this evening with a heartwarming Tree Lighting Ceremony.

This year, the event brought together parishioners from 14 groups, each showcasing beautifully-themed trees that celebrated the important values of ecology, family, society and faith.

The ceremony commenced after the sunset mass, with a vibrant gathering of parishioners and community members, adorned with festive decorations and the warm glow of lights.

Towering the smaller trees was a 30-foot Christmas tree frame, outlined with coloured lights.

Each of the smaller trees were uniquely designed, representing the distinct contributions of various parish groups that came together in the spirit of unity and collaboration.

Monsignor Jude Miranda, the parish priest, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This celebration is not just about lighting trees; it is about illuminating our commitment to inclusivity and embracing the rich diversity that exists within our community.

“Together, we are reminded of the importance of family, the beauty of nature, and the strength of our shared values in faith.”

The themed trees served as symbols of hope and resilience, each narrating a story about the community’s dedication to nurturing ecological awareness, strengthening familial bonds and fostering societal harmony.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception is dedicated to continuing its outreach and engagement with the local community, striving to create inclusive spaces where all individuals can feel welcomed and valued, its parish priest noted.

“Through this event, known as ‘CIC Christmas Aglow 2024’, we have seen the power of coming together as one.

“Let us continue to celebrate our diversity and work hand-in-hand for a brighter future,” Monsignor Miranda said.

The over 200-year-old Church of the Immaculate Conception in Penang, is the home parish to some 3,000 Roman Catholics.
