
PUTRAJAYA, June 8 – Malaysia and Indonesia have possibly marked a new dimension in their bilateral relations, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following a meeting with visiting Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo here today.
Also present at the meeting were Foreign Minister Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir and Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.
In a Facebook posting today, Anwar described the meeting with four leaders involved as highly successful as issues that had outstanding for decades had been resolved.
“I and Joko Widodo, accompanied by our respective foreign ministers, took to resolving issues in the spirit of family and friends, and not just in the context of an ordinary working visit,” Anwar said in his statement.
The partnership and friendship established is expected to bring long term mutual benefits not just for the leaders and governments but for the people of Indonesia and Malaysia as well, he added.
Meanwhile, Malaysian National News Agency BERNAMA reported that six bilateral instruments related to economy, trade, borders and maritime were signed today between the two countries.
They were an Agreement on Border Crossing (BCA), Agreement on Border Trade (BTA), Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Investment Promotion, Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Mutual Recognition of Halal Certification for Domestic Products, Treaty Relating to the Delimitation of the Territorial Seas of the Two Countries in the Southernmost Part of the Straits of Melaka (SOM Treaty), and Treaty Relating to the Delimitation of the Territorial Seas of the Two Countries in the Sulawesi Sea (Sulawesi Sea Treaty).
