KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 – The Conference of Rulers special meeting yesterday has given Malaysians a clear road to fight the ongoing challenges in the country and fight the war against the Covid-19 pandemic, says DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.
In a statement issued on his blog, he called on Malaysians to “put aside our differences, whether political or otherwise, and single-mindedly win the war against the Covid-19 pandemic.”
On Wednesday, the King, Sultan Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Mustafa Billah Shah and the Rulers of the various states called on for the reconvening of Parliament immediately and to also no longer extend the ongoing state of Emergency beyond the original end date of August 1st.
Describing the decision of the Rulers as “light at the end of the tunnel of the 18-month Covid-19 pandemic”, the Member Parliament of Iskandar Puteri, said the move has “ended the various speculations and theories including those with dubious constitutional basis and legitimacy on how the country is to negotiate the constitutional impasse where no person seems to command a clear majority in Parliament while the country is faced with an existential threat by the Covid-19 pandemic.”
He said the focus should now only be on how to win the war against the Covid-19 pandemic and its devastating effect on the life, economy and society in Malaysia.
“Malaysians do not want any constitutional crisis in any form but a single-minded focus by every Malaysian, whether in the Executive or the Legislatures, to win the war against the Covid-19 pandemic – and this must remain the nation’s single-minded focus whether it takes one or two years.
“The stand of the Yang di Pertuan Agong and the Rulers that Parliament and the various State Assemblies should be convened as soon as possible should be endorsed by all Malaysians.”
Kit Siang also called on Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament) Takiyuddin Hassan to fully co-operate to convene Parliament and the various State Assemblies before August 1, 2021.
“Let Malaysians show the world that we can win the war against the Covid-19 pandemic and that we have the wartime mentality to unite against a common foe in the Covid-19 pandemic which is killing Malaysians every day and threatening to destroy the very fabric of the Malaysian nation.”
