Direct Yangon-Penang Flights To Boost Medical Tourism, Strengthen Bilateral Ties


According to Tourism Malaysia, Myanmar visitor arrivals have demonstrated significant growth over the years, reflecting the increasing appeal of Malaysia as a travel destination, with a total of 147,133 Myanmar visitors arriving in 2024. Penang is now connected to 20 major cities across Asia and the Middle East via direct flights, with Yangon becoming the 21st destination.

GEORGE TOWN, April 10 (Bernama) — The launch of Myanmar Airways International’s (MAI) new direct flights from Yangon to Penang, today, is expected to boost medical tourism, capitalising on Penang’s reputation as a leading destination for world-class healthcare services.

Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia Aung Soe Win said that the launch of the direct flights represents a significant milestone, which brings mutual benefits to both nations.

“For the Myanmar community residing in Malaysia, this route offers a convenient and efficient travel option, strengthening family connections and business ties.

“At the same time, it opens the door for Malaysian travellers to explore Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and breathtaking natural beauty,” he said at the inaugural flight welcoming ceremony at Penang International Airport (PIA) in Bayan Lepas today.

Also in attendance were Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai; Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (Promotion II) Samuel Lee; and MAI chief executive officer Tanesh Kumar.

The flight, departing from Yangon at 2.45 pm (local time), took approximately two hours and arrived in Penang at 6.15 pm, where they were welcomed with a traditional water salute upon landing.

Earlier in his speech, Aung expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Malaysian government and people for their prompt and compassionate response, in providing humanitarian aid and deploying search and rescue teams to Myanmar.

He noted that the recent earthquakes had been a challenging time for the people of Myanmar, and Malaysia’s swift support not only offered relief but also demonstrated a strong sense of solidarity during a time of great need.

Meanwhile, Wong said the new direct Yangon-Penang route marks a major milestone in aviation connectivity between the two regions, creating promising opportunities for tourism, business, and cultural exchange.

“We look forward to welcoming more visitors from Yangon to experience Penang’s renowned attractions, including our world-class medical tourism services,” he added.

According to Tourism Malaysia, Myanmar visitor arrivals have demonstrated significant growth over the years, reflecting the increasing appeal of Malaysia as a travel destination, with a total of 147,133 Myanmar visitors arriving in 2024, marking a substantial rise from 102,587 in 2023, and 57,232 in 2019.

Penang is now connected to 20 major cities across Asia and the Middle East via direct flights, with Yangon becoming the 21st destination.
