GOPENG, Oct 4: An agrotourism farm in Gopeng has successfully cultivated Kyoho grapes, a premium variety from Japan, with the plants thriving on the farm.

Agrotech Profarm Gopeng’s Marketing Officer, Wong Kok Wai, said that the farm management, which is also a fertiliser producer, conducted research and development (R&D) in 2019 to cultivate the grapes on nearly two hectares of land.

“With proper care and fertiliser, the first grape seedlings grew and bore fruit, with the sweetness matching that of grapes found in Japan. We have since expanded the cultivation to make it a key attraction on the farm,” he told Bernama recently.

Wong said Kyoho grapes are suitable for cultivation in Malaysia despite the high temperature but must be grown under a covered area as they require meticulous care and appropriate fertilisers.

With the right care, the grapes can yield results within a year, producing black grapes that are tender in texture and have a sweetness resembling berries, different from or

What is also interesting at Agrotech Profarm Gopeng, Kyoho grapes, typically cultivated in four-season type of countries, are sold at a significantly lower price of RM70 per kilogramme (kg) compared to market prices, which can reach up to RM380 per kg.

With some luck, visitors can even pick the grapes themselves and enjoy them fresh from the vine.

Wong revealed that a grapevine can live and bear fruit for up to 100 years.

He also explained that with the farming techniques used at the farm, Kyoho grapes are capable of fruiting all year round.

“Even if there are one or two months without fruit, the rest of the year will continue to produce grapes. On any given day, we can harvest between 10 to 20 kg, which are sold directly to visitors,” he said.

In addition to Kyoho grapes, Wong noted that the farm is also the only place in the country cultivating Taiwanese guava.

In addition, the farm offers a variety of organic vegetables, including mustard greens, water spinach, and more.

Visitors can also enjoy a petting zoo with a range of animals, such as camels, and a catch-and-release fishing pond. The farm also provides accommodation for those looking to extend their stay.

With an affordable entrance fee of RM3 per person, guests have the exclusive opportunity to purchase fresh farm produce during their visit.

Spanning nearly 20 hectares, Agrotech Profarm Gopeng is located in Kampung Pintu Padang, about 20 minutes (or eight kilometres) from Gopeng town.

The farm offers a wholesome experience, combining education, food, entertainment, and nature, making it a perfect destination for families to explore and enjoy together.
