KUALA LUMPUR: The recently held Malaysia Digital Xceleration Summit 2024 was an interesting update of Malaysia’s growth in the digital economy and its continued advancement of facilities, industry support, human resources, and investments in current and future technologies.
As various local and their partner companies displayed their innovations in products, services, the pay-offs from government investments in global tech giants, programmes to equip Malaysians with relevant digital skills, and continued research amid the advancing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) were also evident at the highly interactive two-day event.
The event, which gathered tech visionaries, innovators and influences under a roof, was centred around five transformative technologies expected to shape the future of Malaysia’s digital economy and regional competitiveness, namely Data Trust, Next Gen Computing, Computer Vision, Metaverse and Digital twins, said a press release from organiser, MDEC, an agency under the Digital Ministry.
The importance of talents, setting the right policies and ensuring data and cyber security in parallel with growing sophistication in cyber threats, more so with the advent of AI, were among some of the issues discussed in a special panel featuring Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and former French minister for SMEs, innovation and digital economy Fleur Pellerin.
Pellerin pointed out some of the complexities of the market in the global front and the steep competitiveness, citing the example of how the best talents are usually taken by the large companies due to their cash power.
In his speech earlier, Gobind spoke on the importance of being prepared for the next generation technologies, particularly in facilitating human capital development to meet the demands of a growing digital economy. He said many relevant government policies continue to be reviewed to ensure support for local technology companies so that they can play a leading role in technology development including in the AI industry.
At a press conference later Gobind said that apart from the upcoming National AI Office in December, there were also plans for setting up of a Digital Trust and Safety Commission next year. It will look into data security, protection, storage and management, innovation and governance.
