Government introduces two hydroelectric expansion programmes to boost renewable energy

KUALA LUMPUR — The government has introduced two special programmes that can be joined by renewable energy developers to expand the use of hydroelectric energy as a renewable energy source, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said these two programmes are the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Programme under the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia and the Low Carbon Power Generation (LCPG) Programme under Single Buyer.

“Under the FiT Programme, a quota of 677 megawatts (MW) for small hydro power generation has been approved, while under the LCPG Programme, a quota of 400MW has been allocated for non-solar sources including hydro through the New Enhanced Dispatch Arrangement (NEDA) mechanism,” he said.

He mentioned that hydroelectric sources have contributed 15 per cent of the country’s total electricity supply mix as of December 2023.

He was replying to a question by Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit) regarding the ministry’s planned efforts to expand the use of hydroelectric energy to replace non-renewable energy sources.

NRES PREPARED TO EXPAND WASTE TREATMENT FACILITIES IN COLLABORATION WITH STATE GOVERNMENTS

KUALA LUMPUR — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is prepared to hold discussions with any state government to expand primary facilities for treating and disposing of scheduled waste.

Its Minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said it is an effort to ensure the quality or management of waste is at its best, thereby benefiting various industries in their respective states.

“Indeed, the government has three landfills nationwide currently, and we know that they are not sufficient to accommodate new industries. The risk is well known to us; if the landfills are too far away, there is a risk of disposing of scheduled waste in inappropriate places.

He made these remarks in response to a supplementary question by Datuk Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) who asked whether the ministry plans to expand solid waste disposal sites.
