India speeds up investigations into rail tragedy as death toll rises close to 300

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 – India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said a proper and speedy investigation will be carried out into the train crash tragedy on Friday, June 2, that left close to 300 people dead and hundreds more injured.

Modi, who visited the crash site, where two passenger trains and a third goods train collided in Balasore in the state of Odisha, said prompt and stringent action will be taken against those found guilty in the rail accident, described as the country’s worst in 20 years.

In a press statement issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Modi, who reviewed the rescue and relief operations on Saturday, was quoted saying that no stone will be left unturned to provide all possible medical help to those injured and that the government stood wiith the bereaved family members who had lost their loved ones.

The prime minister also commended the efforts of the Odisha government, local administration and the local people, especially youth, who worked through the night to assist with ongoing efforts. He also lauded the local citizens who turned up in large numbers for blood donation, to help those injured.

India’s Ministry of Railways in its Facebook said restoration efforts were being carried out at the accident site.

It said over 1000 personnel had been deployed in the site to carry out restoration works. It said more than 7 poclain machines, two accident relief trains, as well as three to four railway and road cranes have been deployed for early restoration, with officials monitoring the restoration.
