Let’s continue our tradition of mutual respect and rejoicing in each other’s festivals and culture – Unity Minister

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 28: Malaysians were urged to continue to practise their tradition of mutual respect and partaking in the various multiracial festivals of the country to strengthen their spirit of unity, understanding and acceptance of each other’s culture.

Making this call in his Chinese New Year message and greetings to the Chinese community today, Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said through mutual respect and acceptance, Malaysians will be able to build a stronger, harmonious and prosperous country.

“Let us continue this tradition wholeheartedly, creating a Malaysia that is inclusive, where everyone can live together harmoniously,” he said in a statement issued today.

Chinese nationwide today would be having their traditional New Year Eve’s reunion dinner this evening, which will see all members of a family coming together to savour a variety of dishes usually cooked for this day and welcoming the year ahead.

This year, which falls on Wednesday, January 29, will be the Snake year according to the Chinese calendar. According to Chinese zodiac, the snake is associated with wisdom, charm, elegance, and transformation, while those born in the year are said to be intuitive, strategic, and intelligent.

Meanwhile, National News Agency BERNAMA reported on more Chinese New Year greetings from other Cabinet ministers, who also called for strengthened unity among the people.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke also extended his Chinese New Year greetings to all Malaysians celebrating the festival, wishing happiness, health, and prosperity to everyone.

“In the face of current geopolitical uncertainties, Malaysia’s diverse society, where various cultures coexist harmoniously, is a phenomenon we must treasure deeply,” he said. “Let us celebrate this special bond and cherish it with all our hearts.”

“Wishing everyone a joyful holiday, filled with love and togetherness with your family. Together, let’s continue building a prosperous, peaceful, and successful Malaysia,” he added in a Facebook post.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh also extended her Chinese New Year wishes to Malaysians through a Facebook post, sharing a poster which read, “Gong Xi Fa Cai, everyone!”

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang described the celebration as a symbol of unity and strength in diversity.

“Much like Yee Sang, every colour and flavour represents our uniqueness as Malaysians. Gong Xi Fa Cai! May this year bring luck, happiness, and success to all,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, in his Chinese New Year message, prayed for good fortune, happiness, and success for all Malaysians in the Year of the Snake.

“May your journey be filled with abundance and may the Year of the Snake bring you lasting blessings! Happy Chinese New Year to all!” he said.
