Malaysia Committed To Ending Forced Labour – HR Minister Sivakumar

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 – Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar today reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to end forced labor at the International Labour Summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

Adddressing the Asia Pacific Ministerial Meeting on Tuesday, Sivakumar said this will come with an active promotion of social justice with Malaysia ensuring the rights of workers while providing them better social security.

All these are part of the progress Malaysia is making in empowering all workers, he said, adding that Malaysia had amended the Employment Act 1955, which came into effect on January 1st, this year.

In a statement made available here today, the minister was quoted saying that Malaysia had come forward to fight and prohibit any form of discrimation against workers.

“In a bid to address inequalities and provide inclusive social security, Malaysia has expanded its social security coverage for work-related injuries to migrant workers from 1 January 2019.

On its commitment to prevent forced labour, he said the government has been strengthening cooperation with employers while working closely with labour organisations.

He said the Malaysian Employers’ Federation (MEF) and the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) were also working together to find solutions in the key industries.
