Intake of foreign textiles workers, barbers, jewellerers will be on real need basis
PUTRAJAYA: Human Resources Minister V.Sivakumar on announced that a total of 7,500 foreign workers will be taken in for now to fill vacancies in the three sub-sectors of textiles, barbershops and jewellery making.
This followed discussions between his ministry and the Home Ministry on Friday after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement earlier in the week that a partial lift will be given to the sectors. A freeze was placed on foreign workers intake for the sectors in 2009.
Sivakumar said the opening of the sectors will, however, be on the real need for workers.
The move is to also ensure that employers do not employ foreign workers without proper documents and working permits and prevent any issue of forced labour.
He said his ministry will be working with the Home Ministry and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to fine-tune and put in the suitable mechanisms towards the foreign workers intake processes that comply with the given quota, supervision and verification related to all applications by the relevant ministry.
