Parliament March 7: News In Brief

CONSUMER COMPLAINTS OVER SUPPLY, PRICES OF BASIC COMMODITIES HAS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY

KUALA LUMPUR  — The number of consumer complaints over the supply and prices of basic commodities in the seven channels on offer has increased significantly in the last three years, according to Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Fuziah Salleh.

She said the peak of the increase in complaints was last year when a total of 43,347 complaints were reported compared to 29,265 complaints in the previous year.

“Since the unity government took over the administration, we have made various efforts to rejuvenate the complaint system, such as providing a QR Code Aduan Suri.

“This makes the complaint process more customer-friendly and easier for the users,” she said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.

She said this in reply to a question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) who wanted to know the level of public participation in the complaints platform set up in relation to the supply and prices of basic food items and the extent to which preparations have been made to ensure that such problems do not occur during the festive season.

MPs URGED TO REPORT INTERNET ACCESS COMPLAINTS

KUALA LUMPUR — Members of Parliament are again urged to assist the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in reporting complaints about internet services in their respective areas.

Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching said this is to ensure that immediate action can be taken, including conducting a site visit to resolve the issues raised.

“The MCMC needs detailed information about the problems in order to take appropriate action. So, we need feedback from residents and MPs to further monitor the internet in a particular location because if there are no complaints, it is difficult for us to identify the problem,” she said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.

She was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai)  on the government’s efforts to immediately resolve the problem of still poor internet access in the Kukup and Ayer Masin areas in Johor.

POLITICAL FUNDING BILL IN JPKP’S RESEARCH STAGE

KUALA LUMPUR — The draft of the Political Funding Bill is still at the research stage and is being handled by the Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Election and Institutional Reform (JPKP), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said the views of all registered political parties in Malaysia will also be taken into consideration when studying the draft.

“The committee meeting last Thursday recognised the need for comprehensive coordination on the issues raised, including the right to the extent of payment of contributions from individuals and companies in addition to the public funding system for political parties.

“The drafting of this Bill must be carefully done to meet the criteria for public funding as practised in matured democracies such as Denmark, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Canada,” he said in response to a question by Abd Ghani Ahmad (PN-Jerlun) on the status of the bill during the question and answer session.
