Sinkhole Tragedy: Search to focus on flushing near Wisma Yakin manhole, where obstacles blocking flow in severage pipe have been found

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26: The search for Indian tourist Vijayaletchumi, 48, who fell into a sudden sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India here on Friday, Aug 23, will continue although there have been no definite leads, Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman told a press conference today – at the end of Day 4 of the search operations.

He said the search will now focus on flushing operations at the manhole near Wisma Yakin (close to the site of the sinkhole) where several huge obstacles including concrete material were found to be blocking the sewerage pipe underground.

The obstacles were identified several metres into the pipe with the use of pushrod and crawler inspection cameras, earlier Monday between 3 am and 6am, he said.

High-pressure water jet is being used to break and flush out the hard obstacles found near the Wisma Yakin manhole, he said, adding that this is being undertaken carefully with the breaking up of objects to be only on the hard rocks.

“We also concerned about any other object behind the heavy stones,” he said.

This will enable the water to flow and possibly any other objects including the possibility of a human body being obstructed in the area.

Meanwhile to a question on how long the search will continue, he said it will go on till the victim is found.
