GEORGE TOWN, Sept 22 (Bernama) — Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong has been elected as Penang DAP chairman for the 2024/2027 term, replacing Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who has held the position since 1999.
Election Supervisor Wong Shu Qi announced that Sim, who is also Bukit Mertajam MP, secured the second-highest number of votes with 1,237 in the election during the Penang DAP Ordinary Convention today.
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, who received the highest number of votes with 1,247, was appointed as the state DAP deputy chairman, while Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, who garnered 827 votes, was retained as the State DAP secretary.
State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, who received 1,225 votes, and former state DAP assistant organising secretary Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, who also secured 1,225 votes, were both appointed as state DAP vice chairmen.
The new committee also includes State Youth, Sports, and Health Committee chairman Gooi Zi Sen (1,133 votes), former state DAP assistant organising secretary Lay Hock Peng (1,120 votes), and State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H’ng Mooi Lye (1,074 votes).
A total of 1,452 votes were cast for 31 candidates, with only the top 15 candidates elected to the state committee, while five additional appointments were made by the Central Executive Committee following the election.
Among the notable figures who did not secure a top 15 position was Penang DAP deputy chairman and Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, who garnered only 503 votes.
Besides that, four state assembly members were also unsuccessful in their bid for the top 15 spots, namely Wong Hon Wai (Paya Terubong), who is also the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman; Heng Lee Lee (Berapit); Ong Ah Teong (Batu Lanchang); and Joseph Ng Soon Siang (Air Itam).
Sim, who was the previous term’s Penang DAP vice chairman, stressed that the new committee would continue to support the Penang State Government led by Chow and the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“This committee is a unity team, and I urge all Penang DAP members to close ranks and stand together as a strong team for the benefit of our people and party.
