KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5: In a country like Malaysia, where the weather is often unpredictable with frequent shifts between intense sunlight and sudden downpours, the consistent use of sunscreen is more important than ever. Sunscreen is recognized as a crucial step in skincare, serving as a fundamental shield against the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

“While maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper hydration are essential for overall skin health, protecting your skin from UV damage is equally important. Sunscreen acts as a protective barrier, significantly reducing the risk of premature aging, sunburn, and even skin cancer,” says Dr. Nazirin Ariffin, a renowned dermatologist.

Dr. Nazirin who is the founder of Skin Clinic Nazirin explains that not all sunscreens are created equal , and understanding the difference between UVB and UVA protection is key. UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn and can contribute to skin cancer, while UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, leading to premature aging and long-term damage.

Sunscreens with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings indicate their level of protection against UVB rays. For example, SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50+ offers slightly higher protection, blocking 98% or more. Although this may not sound much of a difference, those who spend prolonged time in the sun, have sensitive skin , or a history of skin cancer, it is advisable for them to use SPF 50+.

In addition to SPF, the PA (Protection Grade of UVA) system is crucial for assessing UVA protection. The highest rating, PA++++, offers extremely high protection against UVA rays, making it ideal for prolonged outdoor activities and those with very sensitive skin.

Sunscreens are generally categorized into physical and chemical types. Physical sunscreens, often containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, work by reflecting UV rays, making them safer for sensitive skin. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat.

For effective skin protection, Dr. Nazirin who is also one of the founders of 16 PERCENT , recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily and at least PA+++ for daily use , even on cloudy days. Reapplication every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating, is essential. Alongside sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, and regularly monitoring skin changes are important practices for maintaining healthy skin.

16PERCENT, Dr. Nazirin’s line of skincare products, includes sunscreens , specifically formulated to cater to different skin needs. These products are available at several clinics and hospitals across Malaysia, as well as on their official website, 16percent.co, and on platforms such as Shopee and Lazada.

For those looking to learn more about the benefits of sunscreen and the best practices for skin protection, Dr. Nazirin recommends consulting with a dermatologist. “Proper skincare is not just about looking good; it’s about protecting your skin from long-term harm,” she concludes.
