Tapir rescued after falling into drain in Kelantan

KOTA BHARU — The Kelantan Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (Perhilitan) rescued a tapir that had fallen into a drain in Kampung Padang Bukit, Lubuk Setol, Rantau Panjang, today.

Its director, Mohamad Hafid Rohani, said the mammal was believed to have strayed from the Jedok Forest Reserve, about 30 kilometres from where the incident took place.

He said the rescue operation which began at 1pm took around two hours, with assistance from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force and the villagers.

“The tapir was found to be in stable condition and has been moved to an appropriate habitat,” he said in a statement today.
