KUALA LUMPUR: Transboundary haze as well as climate change related issues faced by the region are expected to be up for discussions at the inaugural KL Sustainable Summit to be held in conjunction with the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM 2025) this October.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said this during a recent press conference here following the soft launch of the IGEM 2025, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Oct 15 – 17 this year.
Nik Nazmi, who earlier in his keynote address, announced the dates for IGEM 2025 and the KL Sustainability Summit, to be held from Oct 14 – 16, said the summit was aimed at uniting participants from all over the region towards the adaptation and mitigation of climate change via collaborative efforts that will benefit the region.
It will also be in line with Malaysia’s Chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) this year and supportive of Asean’s commitment to a sustainable and resilient future.
The event is expected to provide an international platform for thought leaders to come together and exchange insights and experiences on climate change and sustainability.
The IGEM 2025, jointly organised with the Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), will have the theme ‘Race Towards Net Zero: Inclusivity and Sustainability’.
This year’s event is also expected to generate RM5.5 billion in business leads, attract 250 exhibitors with 500 exhibition booths and welcome participants from 50 countries, solidifying IGEM’s position as a premier platform for green technology and sustainability while strengthening its role as a regional leader.
Last year, IGEM 2024 exceeded all its targets, achieving RM10.182 billion in business leads, attracting 500 exhibitors, and welcoming participants from 68 countries, including China, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Thailand.
Commending the dedication of partners, exhibitors, and participants for setting a foundation for IGEM 2025 to build upon, Nik Nazmi highlighted the importance of collaboration among industry leaders, policymakers, and communities in developing solutions, mobilising capital, and strengthening economies in line with global sustainability goals.
Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), an agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), said MIDA has played a crucial role in driving high-value green investments.
“The steady rise in IGEM’s investment leads, from RM3.08 billion in 2020 to RM6.3 billion in 2024, demonstrates the increasing confidence in Malaysia’s green economy. MIDA, in close partnership with MGTC, remains committed to attracting high-value green investments, solidifying Malaysia’s status as a leading sustainability hub, he said.
Visitors to IGEM 2025 can expect a range of key initiatives, such as the third Malaysia Carbon Market Forum, organised by Bursa Malaysia, with the theme, “Empowering Regional Climate Actions through the ASEAN Common Carbon Framework”.
Over the past 15 years, IGEM has attracted over 670,000 visitors from 126 countries and generated more than RM58 billion in business leads.
