In a recent gathering of budding columnists, an aspiring writer sought guidance on how to unlock their creative potential and locate a platform to publish their columns.
In response to this inquiry, this column aims at exploring techniques and strategies for generating ideas and finding inspiration in the realm of column writing. Furthermore, we will assist in identifying the ideal news platform for sharing these columns with a global audience.
Additionally, I’ll share my personal experiences in connecting with editors and news platforms to help you get your work published.
So, let’s embark on a journey to unleash creativity and discover the path to finding the perfect platform for sharing your thoughts and ideas with the world.
Unleashing Your Creative Genius:
Creating captivating columns commences with harnessing your creativity. Fortunately, creativity is not an elusive muse reserved for a select few; it’s a skill that can be nurtured through practice by anyone. As suggested by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of “Eat Pray Love,” we all possess a creative spirit waiting to be unleashed. Her book “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” serves as an excellent resource for those looking to tap into their creative potential.
Often, all it takes is a catalyst, such as the lockdown experience, to ignite the creativity that inspired me to write my book, “From Lockdown to Liberation: How Writing Saved My Life.” In the following passages, I’ll share some techniques that have helped me tap into my creative soul, which can assist you as well:
• Embrace the Power of Observation: For me, observation is a way of life, given my background as a trained human behaviourist. I keenly observe everything and everyone around me. For those new to this practice, start by closely observing the world around you. Become a non-participating observer, keenly watching without direct involvement.
• Keep a Journal: Carry a small notebook or use your mobile camera to capture interesting thoughts, observations, and conversations. These can become valuable seeds for your future columns. Always seek prior permission when using photos of others and respect privacy when recording conversations.
• Dabble in Different Genres: Don’t limit yourself to one genre or topic. Experiment with various writing styles, from humor to opinion pieces. This diversity can spark new ideas and prevent creative stagnation.
• Brainstorm and Mind Mapping: When you’re stuck, try brainstorming or creating a mind map. This visual approach can help you discover fresh angles and ideas.
• Collaborate and Seek Feedback: Share your ideas with trusted friends, fellow writers, or writing groups. Feedback and collaboration can provide new perspectives and refine your creative process.
Finding Your Ideal Platform:
Now that your creative well is brimming with ideas, it’s time to share them with the world. Finding the right platform for your columns is crucial, albeit a challenging phase for most beginners. Be prepared to face rejections, but perseverance is key.
Here are steps to guide you into the publishing business:
• Define Your Niche: Identify the focus of your columns, whether it’s politics, lifestyle, technology, or personal development. Understanding your niche will guide you in choosing your platform correctly.
• Research Potential Platforms: Explore magazines, newspapers, websites, and blogs worldwide that align with your niche. Pay attention to their style, target audience, and submission guidelines. Doing so, would increase the probability that your columns will be accepted.
• Build a Portfolio: Create a portfolio of your best work to showcase your writing skills and potential. Keep one hard copy handy for your face to face meeting and a link where it may be accessed online.
• Networking and Outreach: Establish connections with editors, writers, and influencers in your chosen field. Networking is a powerful way to build relationships and discover publishing opportunities.
• Pitching Your Ideas: Craft compelling pitches that succinctly convey your column ideas and explain how your content benefits the platform’s readership. Be persistent but respectful in your follow-ups.
Consider starting with platforms closest to you, such as your club magazine or local publications like “Weekly Echo.” Also, explore news aggregator platforms like “Newswav” that are always on the lookout for talented columnists.
Remember, your journey as a writer is unique. Embrace the creative process, diligently research platforms, and connect with fellow writers.
While the path to becoming a successful columnist may be challenging, it is indeed a rewarding adventure that allows you to share your voice and inspire others.
